Mott MacDonald operates across all sectors of the water industry, for all types of clients, and in all regions of the world. Our capabilities include the investigation and development of water resources, the assessment of water needs and implementation of appropriate supplies, the treatability and disposal of wastewater, carbon footprinting, flood risk management and hydraulic engineering. We provide a range of client-focused strategy and management system services to national and local governments as well as private business, helping them develop long term sustainability, environmental protection and socially responsible policies.
Mott MacDonald contributes to sustainable development, best practice and innovation throughout the built environment world-wide, bringing our customers the benefit of services ranging from award-winning energy efficient building design, to whole life costing, to regulatory and strategic advice. We understand the sensitive interaction between water source and supply, and the relationship to morphology and ecology of river systems enabling managers to make appropriate decisions to minimise the economic, social and environmental consequences of their actions.
Mott MacDonald's expertise in climate change impact assessment covers the full range of strategic, tactical and operational planning for both mitigation and adoption. We are at the forefront of the understanding of the impact of carbon emissions on the environment and in taking account of the “carbon footprint” when assessing the sustainability of proposed water and wastewater assets. We have recently undertaken projects to determine operational and embedded CO2 profiles associated with water treatment, water distribution, wastewater collection and wastewater treatment. Studies have also been undertaken to quantify asset vulnerability with respect to climate change.
Our expertise covers all the key areas relevant to estimating and reducing the water footprint of both organisations and processes. Our demand management work for UK and international water utilities and large consumers has included both leakage control and metering projects. Our building services teams have also designed systems to minimise water consumption in new offices as part of landmark sustainable building projects such as the new Manchester Civil Justice Centre. In the agricultural sector we have helped farmers in developing countries to optimise their irrigation water use - safeguarding an often scarce resource.

RPS Water employs enthusiastic, talented staff providing value to our clients and shareholders through strategic consultancy, asset management, operational planning, project management, field services and information management. We work internationally and are currently the leading environmental business support provider to the water sector in the UK.
Since the concept of the water footprint was introduced in 2002, there has been much speculation and discussion in the press and amongst the public with regard to how much water is used by industry and individuals and whether this is sustainable or not. The corporate water footprint is a further step towards transparency in industry and business concerning the environmental impacts of the production and supply chain of everyday products we take for granted.
As part of the RPS global network, RPS Water understands the emerging pressures on our clients to consider these wider environmental aspects of corporate social responsibility. We are able to draw upon broader skill sets from our planning, development and energy sections, enabling us to provide holistic, intelligent solutions to complex, multi-disciplinary challenges. Our ability to integrate specialist knowledge across areas of expertise is highly valued by our clients.
